IRONMAN AT 45

An Ironman at forty five or older? Ten reasons why you should go for it.

There's a lot of great reasons why being an ironman at 45, 50 or even 60 years old is not too late and it's still possible to live the ironman dreams.

1)Just preparing for an Ironman at middle-age by dieting properly and training could well put you in the best physical condition of your life.

2)By improving yourself, you do a wonderful thing for your family and all those close to you.

3)In the eyes of those same people, you will be a role model, a hero and an inspiration.

ironman at 45.

4)Taking on the Ironman challenge will give your life new meaning. As a 14 time Ironman(my last at 55), I guarantee it.

5)You will most likely learn new skills you previously knew nothing about. Just being an Ironman at 45 or older gives you a wide variety of skills and capabilities that may be new to you.

Just learning how to swim is a huge bonus and could one day save your life or the life of someone important to you.

For example, had I fallen out of a boat 4 miles from shore before learning how to swim, so I could do my first ironman, I would have drowned in about 30 seconds.

Now it would be an opportunity for a long training swim.

6)In the course of your training and the race experience itself, you will meet some truly remarkable people. They will find you remarkable as well.

7)You can combine your Ironman race with a holiday and take the family. Most important of all, they will be there to cheer you on and share in your incredible achievement.

8)For the first time, you will learn what you are truly capable of on a physical, emotional and even spiritual level. You will amaze yourself and be a better person for the total experience.

9)You will discover there are few challenges the human spirit cannot overcome and the strength within all of us just has to be given an opportunity to show itself.

10)Finish this race and you will forever have the title Ironman in front of your name.

Being an Ironman at 45 or older can never be taken away from you and every time you hear the word you will be reminded of what a remarkable journey it was and how taking up the challenge was the best decision of your life.

Ray,

"I just completed my first Ironman in St. George, UT. Your book, Ironstruck - 500 Ironman Questions and Answers, was invaluable in preparing me to get to the finish line. I didn't get any surprises during the race, thanks to the info you provided in your book.

Also, your advice about pushing big gears over the tops of hills to gain more speed going down was spot on. I made the bike cut-off in large part to this advice.

Thanks again for a great book and insight!"

hi Ray,

"About 5 years ago just moved from Holland to SA Port Elizabeth I was a spectator of Ironman SA and said to myself I want to do such an event myself onetime.Looking for more info I came across Ironstruck and had a lot of pleasure in reading your stories and I want to compliment you the way you describe these. I also wrote you an email asking you some questions and got response. I know its years ago but I just want to tell you that this year I finished the 70.3 East London 7.10 hrs and Ironman SA 13:10 hrs.And will do it next year again and 12.5 hrs will be my goal.rgds Cees"
