CHEAP RUNNING SHOES... buying running shoes on sale

Cheap running shoes that fit you well are not necessarily a bad choice and can still provide running health benefits.

For some people the cost of high end running shoes these days has escalated to the point where it's beyond their means.

Yet it need not mean that you cannot perform at a high level because all you can afford is a bargain-priced pair of running shoes.

I remember reading a book by a running and fitness expert who maintained that so much attention was being given to making shoes appealing, attractive, and light-weight that often the foot support is not what it should be.

He claimed that every year major shoe distributors make changes that are supposed to make their latest shoe much better than the pair that was supposedly the very best the year previous.

His theory was, "why not buy a pair of running shoes from a year or two previous that is marked down to make room for the new models?"

He also suggested that instead of paying top dollar for a pair of name brand shoes, runners might be better off to buy two or three pairs of cheap, "no-name" running shoes sold by large retail "box-stores" who buy on volume and don't necessarily specialize in running shoes. Although I never took it that far, I did find a way to find great shoes at excellent prices.

I took his advice and for the last 15 years of my career I never paid more than $50 for a pair or running shoes.

I bought a great pair of light-weight name brand racing flats from a local running store that were an older model shoe that had been reduced to less than half price.

Once I had them nicely broken in, I put them away for race-day and wore them for about 6 Ironman marathons including one that was a 3:34.

For the actual marathon itself I preferred a shoe that was as light as possible, but for training I looked for sturdier shoes that could withstand all the training miles plus the ice and snow I usually ran on every winter.

I found many excellent "cheap running shoes" that are often available at year-end blow-out sales. Sometimes I would buy two or three pairs and be all set for training shoes for a year or so.

So yes, cheap running shoes can be good running shoes if you take the time to shop around and look for the year-end deals when all the new models are coming out.

Ray,

"I just completed my first Ironman in St. George, UT. Your book, Ironstruck - 500 Ironman Questions and Answers, was invaluable in preparing me to get to the finish line. I didn't get any surprises during the race, thanks to the info you provided in your book.

Also, your advice about pushing big gears over the tops of hills to gain more speed going down was spot on. I made the bike cut-off in large part to this advice.

Thanks again for a great book and insight!"
