HINTS, RUMORS, AND SPECULATION

Over the course of the coming year there is sure to be some interesting tidbits of information emerging about next years Ironman Canada. There always is.

That goes for the triathlon world in general and as the year goes by, I will post anything I happen to hear about Penticton 2011 or triathlon and Ironman subjects of interest on this page.

***I think it's important to comment on the new policy as far as entering the lottery for a spot into Ironman Hawaii for those who have Kona on their bucket list.

It's actually quite a big deal that all 200 spots are now open to anyone and not just Americans. As you probable know, in the past 150 spots were designated for the U.S. and 50 for the rest of the world.

So now is your chance. Your odds just improved 300% of getting picked. Don't laugh, just last year I met two people in my area alone (Calgary)who won spots when it was still at 50.

LOTTERY HAWAII UPDATE

The 2011 Ironman Lottery Program will officially open on Friday, Oct. 1, at noon EDT and will close on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011. Winners will be announced on Friday, April 15, 2011, at noon EST on ironman.com. One entry per athlete; duplicate entries will not be valid.

IRONMAN HAWAII 2011 LOTTERY RESULTS ARE IN!

Are you one of the lucky ones who managed to land a spot in Hawaii 2011? If you did then congratulations! It is the most sought after endurance race entry in the world.

From the great big Country of Canada, I only counted 10 who were lucky enough to have their names drawn.

***During a book signing at a city mall the other day here in Calgary I had a woman stop by and we had an interesting conversation.

She said she was from South Africa and her son had been at home in Africa training for Ironman South Africa and gave up on it because so many cyclists in South Africa were getting stopped on the road and robbed of bikes, cell phones, money, or anything else of value.

As if it's not bad enough just trying to get ready for an Ironman. Now it's come down to people riding in packs and many triathletes in that country will no longer ride alone or in many cases, give up on triathlon completely.

***Upon visiting a few popular tri-forums I saw a re-occurring thread about how long Ironman Canada 2011 spots were available on registration day. We all know that IMC fills very quickly.

ironman-canada-2011

Rumor has it that over 3,500 entries will be in next years race. Yes, so far it is a rumor but it might explain why there were spots available longer than normal.

If it's true, this would surely be the biggest ironman race on the planet and bodes well for an interesting swim start.

ENTRY UPDATE, MARCH 26,2011

Here is a bit of a breakdown as far as entries for Iroman Canada 2011:

THERE ARE 226 ENTRIES FROM CALGARY, 203 FROM VANCOUVER, 100 EDMONTON ENTRIES,4 BANFF ENTRIES AND 7 CANMORE ENTRIES.

There is a total of 1596 entries from Canada, 1497 from the U.S., 38 from Mexico, and 6 from Germany.

Of course this is not every country that is represented, so I think it's safe to assume that over 3000 entries will answer the starting Canada on race morning in late August 2011.

***Just curious about Sister Madonna's wetsuit and if the IMC 2010 swim was the first time she wore it? Also wondering what the make was. If you know, contact me and I will post the info as I'm sure people would be interested.

Also wondering if the amazing "Iron Nun" has entered the 2011 IMC event? Of course I suppose they would let her enter at a later date is she chooses to do so.

UPDATE ON SISTER MADONNA

Glad to see that Sister Madonna has indeed registered for Ironman Canada 2011.

These are some of her amazing accomplishments since she first laced on a pair of running shoes.........

All together, Sister Madonna has competed in more than 340 triathlons, including over 40 Ironman triathlons, and countless races earning her the title, “Iron Nun.” Sister Madonna also competes in the Senior Olympics and holds records in the 1 mile, 5 km, 5 mile, 800 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters, and 10,000 meters.

READERS OF MY BOOK IRONSTRUCK HAVE THIS TO SAY ABOUT IT

*** "I wrote to you sometime last year, when I was debating whether or not to use a mountain bike for my first attempt at Ironman. You wrote a both sensible and encouraging reply.

In the end, I opted to purchase a road bike. I've forwarded you the story of how my race went, but most of all I wanted to say thanks again for your book Ironstruck, which I read and re-read a bunch of times, and which was by far my favorite of all of the half dozen or so I read during the course of my training."

All the best,Eric

I just completed my first Ironman in St. George, UT. Your book, Ironstruck - 500 Ironman Questions and Answers, was invaluable in preparing me to get to the finish line. I didn't get any surprises during the race, thanks to the info you provided in your book.

Also, your advice about pushing big gears over the tops of hills to gain more speed going down was spot on. I made the bike cut-off in large part to this advice.

Thanks again for a great book and insight!

I also wrote you an email asking you some questions and got response. I know its years ago but I just want to tell you that this year I finished the 70.3 East London 7.10 hrs and Ironman SA 13:10 hrs.And will do it next year again and 12.5 hrs will be my goal.rgds Cees

When I think of all the people I have heard from over the past few years who have said my two Ironstruck books helped them realize their Ironman dream I am beginning to think they have gotten more people to the Ironman finish line than any triathlon book in the world.

"Ironstruck...The Ironman Triathlon Journey" is a perfect book for those who have the Ironman on their mind and perhaps need some motivation, inspiration, and encouragement to help them make that final decision to challenge the Ironman and make it to the finish line.

"Ironstruck? 500 Ironman Triathlon Questions and Answers" is most like the only Q+A book in the world on the subject of triathlon in general and the Ironman.

This is the perfect book for the triathlete who has decided to take on the Ironman for the first time, or perhaps has done one or two and would like some insight from a different point of view.

It is a great companion book for "Ironstruck...The Ironman Journey" and the pair of books would make a great gift.
