THE IRONMAN FINISH LINE

The ironman finish line. You are about to realize your dream with the finish line in sight and the race announcer's excited voice bringing you home.

Your first Ironman finish line and there is no way to truly describe the emotions you will feel as you complete the final few hundred meters.

The Ironman is so much more than a race. It is an awakening of the spirit deep inside all of us. For many, their first Ironman and the months leading up to it have been a journey of self-discovery.

It is NOT easy to reach this point. The road to the ironman finish is strewn with broken dreams. In any given race six to twelve per cent of those who start will not finish. So in fact, in just ten races somewhere around two thousand starters will not finish.

Ironman finish line.

There is nowhere to hide in the Ironman. That's what makes it so great. It is YOU facing your demons alone. It is YOU who must look into the eye of the tiger and stare it down.

The Ironman by its very nature will challenge you in every possible way, that's what makes realizing your ironman dream such a truly amazing accomplishment and one that will change you forever.

Being an ironman looks good on any resume'. It shows dedication, focus, determination, strength of spirit, and courage. Believe me, when you succeed at reaching the finish line, you will become a member of a very special and elite family.

I'm sure the 'Iron spirits' of Kona smile each time a new addition is welcomed into the ironman family.

I truly hope there is something in these pages that will help you in some small way to realize your dream. If so, then I have accomplished what I set out to do.

I will leave you with this. Five years after I finished my first Ironman I received a Christmas card just out of the blue.

Post-marked Kona.

It only ever came that one year and I will cherish it forever. It only had two words on it besides Merry Xmas.

Two words that I hope can one day can be said to you.

ALOHA IRONMAN!

Ray,

"I just completed my first Ironman in St. George, UT. Your book, Ironstruck - 500 Ironman Questions and Answers, was invaluable in preparing me to get to the finish line. I didn't get any surprises during the race, thanks to the info you provided in your book.

Also, your advice about pushing big gears over the tops of hills to gain more speed going down was spot on. I made the bike cut-off in large part to this advice.

Thanks again for a great book and insight!"

hi Ray,

"About 5 years ago just moved from Holland to SA Port Elizabeth I was a spectator of Ironman SA and said to myself I want to do such an event myself onetime.Looking for more info I came across Ironstruck and had a lot of pleasure in reading your stories and I want to compliment you the way you describe these. I also wrote you an email asking you some questions and got response. I know its years ago but I just want to tell you that this year I finished the 70.3 East London 7.10 hrs and Ironman SA 13:10 hrs.And will do it next year again and 12.5 hrs will be my goal.rgds Cees"
