WEIGHT LOSS running and biking and burning calories, coconut oil for burning fat and much more

If new triathletes have a bit of weight loss work to do, combining swim, bike, and run training with better nutrition choices is the best way to get positive results that last.

TRIATHLON IS FOR EVERYONE

One of the reasons triathlon is taking the world by storm is because it is a sport for people of all ages and all levels of athletic ability.

By it's nature, triathlon often attracts those who have not been physically active on a regular basis for some time. Add to that the fact that perhaps their diet has not been the best and you have many new triathletes who have a few extra pounds to lose and often this excess weight is front and center on their mind.

REGULAR EXERCISE AND SOUND NUTRITION IS THE KEY

It's been proven over and over again that no matter what diet a person happens to be on, weight loss results are much quicker and more permanent when physical exercise on a regular basis is part of the formula.

There is a snowball effect. Once a person starts getting fitter, and looking and feeling better, they are not so quick to give up on their healthier way of life. They like what they see and try that much harder to keep going in the same direction.

FIT DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SKINNY

It does not mean that a person has to be super-slim to be a triathlete. As one Ironstuck convert told me after becoming an Ironman in South Africa, "I didn't lose all my extra weight, but I went from fat to fit in one year and now I'm an Ironman".

I talked about this in my latest book for beginner triathletes, "Triathlete In Transition". I talked about all the times I was passed in the swim or on the ironman bike course by triathletes who were probably 50 pounds or more heavier than I was.

I never thought "oh my God! I just got passed by a fat lady!

What I really thought was, "how the Hell can I learn how to bike like that"!

It seems to make sense that if you eat smart and do your swim, bike, and run training that you will end up at the perfect weight for "YOU".

CALORIES LOST TRAINING

I never was one to count calories, but it does stand to reason that if the calories you burn for fuel exceed the calories you consume then you have found the true secret to finding the perfect body weight for you. And just think. You didn't need 15 diet books to figure it out.

CALORIES BURNED BIKING

Every time you hit the road on your bike or climb onto your wind-trainer and do a workout the calories burned biking are enormous.

It's surprising how much energy it takes to keep those wheels spinning and that's most likely why pro cyclists are some of the fittest people on the planet.

CALORIES BURNED RUNNING

It's the very same with getting out there and power-walking, running easy, running on a wind-trainer, or running fast.

The calories burned running and power-walking will often far exceed the calories you consume.

What usually ends up happening is that in many cases triathletes will eat more than they ever did before they took up the sport because they need it for fuel.

That's why it's important to choose the best complex carbohydrates, optimum fat choices, and sufficient quality protein to speed recovery and re-build muscle.

Basically, this is the fuel that feeds the high-performance engine your body will eventually become if you are dedicated to a sound diet and the regular exercise your training will become if you embrace triathlon as a way of life.

SOME FOODS ENCOURAGE WEIGHT LOSS

Often people are quite surprised when they hear of certain foods that are attributed to reducing body fat and making them fitter and healthier all at the same time.

RAW FOOD WEIGHT LOSS

For example, there are those who swear by raw food and it's ability to impact health and body weight. However, raw food is not for everyone as it can be hard to digest.

Just the same raw food weight loss is worth looking into.

COCONUT OIL WEIGHT LOSS

Perhaps one of the least known fat burning super foods is coconut oil. It has amazing qualities that make it capable of speeding up the body metabolism.

Coconut oil is actually a fat that helps burn fat and that makes it pretty special.

It seems to speed up the fat burning process and this might explain why coconut oil weight loss is more likely for those who are physically active on a regular basis.

QUICK WEIGHT LOSS

Perhaps this is one of the most contentious issues when it comes to people looking for the key to losing weight in a hurry.

Diet books, weight reduction drugs, diet pills, and fad diets are all part of the big picture, but ultimately there is a superior method of losing weight in a healthy way that is as permanent as you want it to be.

Quick weight loss is always not the best answer.

TEEN WEIGHT LOSS

Around 45 years ago when I was in high school there were always a few kids who were over-weight, but they were definitely in the minority.

For this latest generation of teenagers it's a far different story. Obesity among teens and pre-teens in North America has spun out of control.

It's very sad when 12 and 13-year-old kids are being diagnosed with type two diabetes, especially when something as simple as a more nutritional diet and regular fitness activities could easily have prevented it.

If teens would start eating smarter and take up a sport like triathlon that is great for anyone regardless of their athletic ability, they could easily improve their health and well-being.

The key to teen weight loss might be as simple as giving up on low quality fast food and learning how to bike, run, and swim.

Ultimately, regardless if a person is a teen or an adult, the key to having a body that is healthy, strong, and likely to raise self-esteem to new heights is to enjoy fitness on a regular basis and make smarter food choices.

An active person with a great diet is a force to be reckoned with and the sky as they say, is pretty well the limit.

READERS OF MY BOOK IRONSTRUCK HAVE THIS TO SAY ABOUT IT

*** "I wrote to you sometime last year, when I was debating whether or not to use a mountain bike for my first attempt at Ironman. You wrote a both sensible and encouraging reply.

In the end, I opted to purchase a road bike. I've forwarded you the story of how my race went, but most of all I wanted to say thanks again for your book Ironstruck, which I read and re-read a bunch of times, and which was by far my favorite of all of the half dozen or so I read during the course of my training."

All the best,Eric

I just completed my first Ironman in St. George, UT. Your book, Ironstruck - 500 Ironman Questions and Answers, was invaluable in preparing me to get to the finish line. I didn't get any surprises during the race, thanks to the info you provided in your book.

Also, your advice about pushing big gears over the tops of hills to gain more speed going down was spot on. I made the bike cut-off in large part to this advice.

Thanks again for a great book and insight!

I know its years ago but I just want to tell you that this year I finished the 70.3 East London 7.10 hrs and Ironman SA 13:10 hrs.And will do it next year again and 12.5 hrs will be my goal.rgds Cees

When I think of all the people I have heard from over the past few years who have said my two Ironstruck books helped them realize their Ironman dream I am beginning to think they have gotten more people to the Ironman finish line than any triathlon book in the world.

"Ironstruck...The Ironman Triathlon Journey" is a perfect book for those who have the Ironman on their mind and perhaps need some motivation, inspiration, and encouragement to help them make that final decision to challenge the Ironman and make it to the finish line.

"Ironstruck? 500 Ironman Triathlon Questions and Answers" is most like the only Q+A book in the world on the subject of triathlon in general and the Ironman.

This is the perfect book for the triathlete who has decided to take on the Ironman for the first time, or perhaps has done one or two and would like some insight from a different point of view.

It is a great companion book for "Ironstruck...The Ironman Journey" and the pair of books would make a great gift.
